Like Before the Dance (cat. no. 48), this photograph was also selected for the first Japan Photographic Salon. It is a work that only this artist could have created--a photographer taking news photographs for the photography division of the Asahi Graph but also creating art photographs as an exponent of Pictorialism and making effective use of the bromoil printing process. The youth starting the bonfire is shot realistically; but the perfectly balanced composition evokes a picture scroll and beautifully captures the feeling of this slice of life.
