This is a list of all 37 types of merchants that existed in Tokyo around Meiji 10 in the form of a ranking. The breakdown shows that the list mostly consists of merchants who have continued their business from the Edo period, like owners of kimono stores and general stores, but there are some merchants who started a new business from the late Edo period to early Meiji period, such as selling photographs, clocks, gas lamps, and western-style umbrellas. This list offers a valuable data on types of businesses that existed in Tokyo at the beginning of the Meiji period. Ozaki Tomigorō, who created the ranking, was a publisher named Sanoya (later Kinseidō) and was also a fiction writer under the pen name Goyōsha Manju.
