A Box Returning to the Sky No.5 箱は空へかえってゆく No.5

HORIUCHI Masakazu 堀内 正和

When we visualize a small box springing out of the sculpture and rising silently into the sky, the small sculpture, itself tied down to the ground, reaches to the sky. Within the box that is supported by the downmost hand is another, same hand. While the hand at the bottom firmly supports the box's weight, the second one is shown as just having thrown the box upwards and the tension gone from the fingers. The second box is afloat, only slightly apart from the fingertips. And within that box again we see another hand. This third hand is relaxed and elegant as it sees the box off as it returns into the sky. The small hand gives the impression that the box was cherished. Masakazu Horiuchi is well known for his abstract sculptures constructed of geometric forms, but he has also produced a group of works which capture human existence both perceptively and sensitively. This particular work shows us that the future parting already exists in the first box like a seed. Then we see that, probably, the box that returns to the sky is our own self that must leave this world some day.rn
