Born in Okayama Prefecture, MIKI was hired by Time-Life’s Tokyo bureau to photograph soldiers being returning from detention in Siberia. That work led to his being hired as a Life magazine staff photographer. This photograph of Louis Armstrong, the jazz trumpet player and symbol of America, is from his first visit to Japan. Jazz, born of a fusion of Black and white music, is a style of music and a cultural artifact that could only have developed in America.
