This work was awarded the bronze prize at the 19th Kenten in July 1930. This photographer had repeatedly demonstrated his unassailable mastery as a maker of studio portraits who, while paying careful attention to the “form” demanded of commercial photographs in Japan was also able to capture the inner character of his models. This sublimely finished bromoil portrait of a ninety-nine-year-old priest conveys the human strengthen that animates his subject, a man grounded in reality but taking a philosophical view of life.
