ENOKURA Koji 榎倉 康二

Black acrylic paint stains white cotton cloth and creates a monochrome world. The paint has seeped across the seam and the black band, with its subdued luster, has an overwhelming presence. It looks like the surface of an asphalt road after rain. The dark paint fades gradually from the luminous black to the bands of matte black and brown, leaving a white, untouched area, making us see, after the event, the spreading of paint with the passage of time, and also feel the physical presence of the artist as he stains the cotton cloth with acrylic. Always staying outside the approaches taken by the "Mono-ha" artists, Enokura has always been mainly concerned with the communication and exchange between the outside (the real world, things, landscapes) and the inside (the body, perception, sensitivity). In the early 1970s, his activity revolved around performance art and situational installation, such as one presenting pieces of paper as they absorbed waste oil. Later in the decade he started to produce two-dimensional works. The "Figure" series, to which this work belongs, was started in the early l980s. According to the artist, the "figure" is the comprehensive appearance of things, including not only the work itself but also the space surrounding it. This work too, whenever it is exhibited, generates a fertile buffering space around it, which gently connects the artist himself, the exhibition space, and the material (cotton and acrylic).rnrn
