Strand, who was born in New York, had been influenced by Pictorialism, but later did straight photography on subjects symbolizing the machine age. Strand’s candid camera technique enabled him to photograph people on the streets of New York without their being aware of what he was doing. Blind Woman was published in the final issue of Camera Work, in 1917.
