SAKURAI Eiichi 桜井栄一

In the center of this rural landscape found on the outskirts of Tokyo, a man is walking, pushing a bicycle. The image is filled with nostalgia for disappearing landscapes and ways of life. While it includes a modern element in the bicycle, the longing for the past that it communicates is very much the attitude that NAKAJIMA Kenkichi advocated. It shows an aspect of Japanese feeling that transcends a particular era. By remaining true to this attitude, this photographer won wide acclaim overseas after World War II.
