This work was shown at the annual exhibition of Britain’s Royal Photographic Society in 1923 is confirmed by the entry slip attached to the mat on which it is mounted. The extreme soft focus used in this image may express the photographer’s romantic sentiments about the transience of life. The decorative frame in which the work has come down to us was created by the photographer himself; it seems likely that it was originally displayed in this form.
