SAKAI is said to have produced this work as his graduation work for the provisional photography department at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. The existence of that graduation work in the school’s collection has, however, yet to be confirmed. This print was in SAKAI’s own collection. The model is said to have been a fellow student at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Rather than a realistic depiction of the human figure, Sakai seems to have attempted, though his subject’s robust musculature, to provide visual expression of the spirit of youth boldly striding into the future.
