Among the Taisho-period images of nudes produced by the pigment print method, the best known is NOJIMA Yasuzo’s work, with its presentation of the human figure. This photograph by NAGAE Hiroshi, a classic example of Pictorialism, provides a direct contrast. The composition of this nude, in which the model sits on a sofa in an interior filled with soft light as she gazes at a painting leaning against a wall, evokes the plein air style. Here we see a version of Pictorialism that faithfully emulates the style and composition of such paintings.
