In contrast to Torokyo (cat. no. 62), a work by the same photographer in which the horizontal framing suggests a traditional Japanese scroll, in this work the extreme vertical framing suggests a tanzaku (long narrow card on which a Japanese poem is written). In the early 1920s, nudes were extremely rare. The bold trimming of the head and part of the back of the girl’s long, slender body are, however, rather than a return to Japanese tradition, an expression of Modernism with roots in European Japonisme.
