Born in New Jersey, Stieglitz studied photography at Berlin’s Technische Hochschule, and was initially influenced by Pictorialism. After returning to the United States, he organized the Photo-Secession in 1902, laying the foundations for modern photography in American. Picasso is said to have praised this photograph for its composition, which divides the plane into two sets of forms. Stieglitz’s eye captured the contrast between two very different worlds and gave visual form to human emotions.
