The residents of Tokyo’s Asakusa district reminded KIKAI Hiroo of people he had met prior to moving to the city and those he had worked with before becoming a photographer. This sense of nostalgia and intimacy inspired him to start as an ongoing series of portraits depicting people from the area. Constantly emphasizing the noble qualities of the working class and ordinary people, KIKAI attempts to treat each of his subjects with respect, making them “look as cool as possible with a sense of presence and dignity.”
