A note in the photographer’s scrapbook says that this work was specially selected for a outstanding award at the Portrait Photograph Exhibition organized by the Japan Photographic society; but other details remain unclear. It is evident, however, from the photographer’s love-filled gaze that that his relationship to the girl was a close one. We also note the enormous skill and distinctiveness imparted by the use of light blue pigment in a bromoil printing process, a rarity for Pictorialism in Japan.
