This work was one of three by this photographer awarded prizes at the twentieth Kenten in June 1931. Geisha Girl and June Landscape received the silver prize, the highest awarded that year. Still Life won the bronze. All three were bromoil prints. This photograph of an apprentice geisha goes beyond presenting a beautiful image to express the photographer’s own aesthetic awareness. KOMETANI Koro praised it, saying, “From an overall perspective it is nearly perfect” and “The skill demonstrated is truly extraordinary.”
