FUCHIKAMI Hakuyo 淵上白陽

The photographer, who made expressionism his trademark, created this photograph the year before he left Japan for Manchuria. His subjects are two peasant women, who appear to have been shot from a low angle. During the enlargement they were then stretched further in the vertical, resulting in the deformation we see. The combination of sepia tint and rag-wipe retouching is shot through with the photographer’s almost violent sympathy with working people’s lives. This image speaks of the heat of his passion for the “human art” he pursued.

Vietnam Operation to invade Laos by the South Vietnamese government forces. About 25 kilometers from the Lao border, armored vehicle units touched a minefield and exploded with a loud noise. At that moment, soldier knocked down from the armored vehicle by the impact and knelt with a grenade in his right hand, and injured soldiers hugged in the far left. One of these series of photographs became the cover of the March 12, 1971 issue of "LIFE"
