This work was awarded the Minister of Education’s prize in the second division of the first Japan Photographic Art Exhibition, organized by the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun and Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun newspaper companies. When it was published by Ars in the March 1926 issue of Geijutsu shashin kenkyu, NAKAJIMA Kenkichi wrote that, “it is interesting as a work whose painterly pattern is utterly distant from any trace of scientific perspective.” He continued, “This is a work of the mind not based on an interest in composition; it has the flavor of a sugoroku (traditional Japanese board game) board divided by an old-fashioned checked pattern. This photographer has, in a very modern manner, digested an old form and made it his own.”
