KUSAKABE Kimbei worked as an assistant to Felice Beato and also sold albums of photographs and other items to foreigners who visited Japan, which is how the name Kimbei became known in Europe and North America. In Japan, however, his name was forgotten until relatively recently. Compared to the hand-colored prints produced by Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried, the colors applied to Kimbei’s prints are very pale.
