MORI Chihiro 森 千裕

MORI Chihiro (1978- ) creates innumerable drawings, seemingly vomiting out the visual memories she unconsciously accumulates in the city---the logos of companies, products, and sports teams, scenes from movies, and so on---then reconstructs her drawings, collage-like, in paintings. The scribblings of her childhood, when she saw the world in high resolution images, and the playful associations they contain are also an important guidepost in her creation of art. The process of physically manipulating images---at times using Japanese paper, which easily absorbs paint, and at times spreading layers of glue to create a translucent surface---is itself her motivation for painting pictures. Then, we must not overlook the sense of protest and estrangement that guides her perception of the social model advocated by a flood of urban imagery and of “popular trends” supported by large numbers of people.
