ADACHI Kiichiro 足立 喜一朗

The work's title, e.e.no.24, stands for "experimental equipment no.24." In actions of guerilla art, the artist placed the work in various public places, such as in Shimokitazawa in Setagaya or front of Tokyo Metropolitan Government in Shinjuku, where passers-by actually experienced it. The video provides documentation of what occurred at those times. Inside the telephone booth, a mirror ball and music player have been installed. The person entering the booth puts on headphones, hears infectious dance music, and enjoys being in a "one-man disco" in a private space shut off from the outside world. The telephone booth, nevertheless, is actually enclosed in magic mirrors: the person inside, who sees only his or her reflection without being able to see outside, is completely exposed to outside view. People outside the booth watch the person inside with a feeling as if they were peeping. With surprising ease, the work disassembles the relationship of "seeing" and "being seen" that we take for granted in a public telephone booth. It can as such be considered to function as a device for disrupting established social relationships.rnrn
