Relatum (Relation among Stone, Iron, Glass and Others) 関係項(石・鉄・ガラスその他の関係)

LEE Ufan 李 禹煥

On a rectangular sheet of iron, another sheet of glass of the same size is overlaid, and roughly at the center, a natural rock of some size is placed. On the surface of the iron plate, white lines are drawn in a broken circle around the stone. The regular outline of the sheets of iron and glass, both industrial products, is contrasted by the irregular and accidental form of the rock. At the same time, the rock and the iron plate, both heavy and assertive, are separated by the cool hardness of the glass. The three objects are presented both as individual things and as a set, in which the act of bringing them together makes the existing relations visible. They are the relations among the objects, those between the objects and people (the artist and the viewers), and those between the objects and the space they are in. On another level, the work makes us aware of the relation between the world as a whole comprising objects and space and the human beings. "The world exists as something that transcends myself and something that is impenetrable. I have chosen, in facing this impenetrable Other, to make the Self turn into the Other constantly. A work represents a relation emerging from an encounter with the Other, and is the space where this takes place." (Lee U-Fan) Lee was the leading artist and theorist in the "Mono-ha" movement in the late 1960s and the years that followed. He has since established his unique styles both in painting and sculpture that are considered models of contemporary art outside the Western tradition, and is highly regarded both inside and outside Japan.rnrn
