KOISHI Kiyoshi 小石 清

Born in Osaka, Koishi joined the Naniwa Photography Club in 1928. Influenced by Man Ray, Moholy-Nagy, and other avant-garde photographers, he made effective use of a variety of photographic techniques, including the photogram, solarization, and infrared photography. In 1932, he showed a masterly work, the series entitled Early Summer Nerves, in the twenty-first Namiten (Naniwa Photography Club exhibition). In 1936, he published a reference book on special photographic techniques, Satsuei - Sakuga no Shin Giho (New techniques for photographing and making prints). In 1940, he published another masterwork, Half World, a series of ten images based on photographs he had taken in China, at the front. The Half World series was shown in the twenty-ninth Namiten; the ten works in it are filled with scathing criticism of war.
