Camellia 椿

SHIMAMURA Hoko 島村 逢紅

The distinctive features of this photographer’s still life style was his effective use of the sharp renderings the lens could capture to bring a modern taste in composition to traditional motifs. “Roso’s white and Hoko’s black” won the praises of their contemporaries. This work is an example of the jet black so characteristic of Hoko and his use of gradations of it to present with a special sharpness the camellia floating in the visual field. Intense senses of tension combined with tranquility imbue the image, reflecting the acute gaze of the photographer and his unique aesthetic world.
