One Hundred Scenes from Great Tokyo Metropolis in the Showa Era: No. 27, Sports Season in May at Jingū Gaien 昭和大東京百図絵版画 第二十七景 五月のスポーツ・シーヅン神宮外苑
小泉癸巳男/画
This print is a part of the ""One Hundred Scenes from Great Tokyo Metropolis in the Showa Era"" series. The creator, Kishio Koizumi (1893-1945), portrayed the new views of the reconstructed Tokyo after the city recovered from the Great Kanto Earthquake. He began creating the prints in 1940 (Shōwa 15), but unsatisfied with the initial one hundred prints he created, he continued to make additional prints with great devotion, and ultimately chose one hundred scenes to complete the series. This particular print does not appear on the list of scenes compiled by Koizumi at the time. He may have eliminated it from the list when finalizing the series, but it depicts a refreshing scene of men and women, the old and the young, gathering at the reconstructed city's new landmark and enjoying spectating sports.
