This work was awarded the Minister of Education’s award as well as first prize in the first division of the second Japan Photographic Art Exhibition in May 1927. This work drew a sharp line between itself and the landscape style that had become dominant in Japanese Pictorialism. SAKAKIBARR Aoba, who was a member of the jury, praised it extravagantly, saying, “The way in which it treats these ancient mountains is not at all old-fashioned. The skill with which the simplified forms of the mountains fill the entire image in an effortless manner, much like that of the Korin, makes this an exquisite and irresistible example of gum-bichromate technique.”
