This photograph was taken when accompanying Lt. George Wheeler’s survey expedition. There was a strong military angle to this expedition that aimed to carry out geological surveys and to map Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. For O’Sullivan, who detested commercial studio photography, the frontier was certainly a new world.
