Renjo produced many Japanese genre photographs, but he also made portraits of famous people such as the portrait of NAKAJIMA Saburosuke . Here we a portrait of Ieyasu Tokugawa made by photographing a drawing. It’s difficult to know for certain but it seems probable that the drawing from which this photograph was made was also done by Renjo. It’s possible that after carte-de-visite sized portraits became popular, there was demand for photographs of famous people in the same size and format.
