Hybrid Exhibition Integrating Offline and Online Experiences
The "TOKYO Smart Culture Project," promoted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, is a project that digitizes, records, and preserves the cultural resources held by metropolitan cultural facilities, while also providing diverse forms of appreciation experiences. As part of this project, a hybrid exhibition will be held that combines physical materials from the "Tokyo Collection," which is held by metropolitan cultural facilities, with digital archives, integrating offline and online experiences.

Daido Moriyama / Nagatani Laboratory
Daido Moriyama
Born in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture in 1938, he transitioned from a designer career, working as an assistant to Takeji Iwamiya and Eikoh Hosoe before becoming a freelance photographer in 1964. In 1967, he received the Japan Photo Critics Association Newcomer Award for his series including "Nippon Gekijo" (Japan Theater), published in Camera Mainichi. His work has been featured in numerous large-scale exhibitions both in Japan and internationally, including at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1999, later touring to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Japan Society (New York)), the National Museum of Art, Osaka (2011), a joint exhibition with William Klein at the Tate Modern (London) (2012-2013), and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (2020). He has received high international acclaim, including the International Center of Photography (New York) Lifetime Achievement Award (2012), the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government (2018), and the Hasselblad International Photography Award (2019).
Nara Women's University, Nagatani Laboratory
The Nagatani Laboratory at the Faculty of Engineering, Nara Women‘s University, explores new possibilities of expression by integrating cutting-edge technology and visual arts, while also working to cultivate female engineers and promote regional culture. Since 2023, they have been collaborating with the Irie Taikichi Memorial Nara City Museum of Photography to develop talent related to art, called “ あ3 - the cube of a”. “Replicated Sensibility DAIDO MORIYAMA by NWU Nagatani Lab. Monika Orpik” (Planning and supervision: Tamaki Nagatani [Professor, Faculty of Engineering, Nara Women's University] / Special cooperation: Hiroshi Ohnishi [Director, Irie Taikichi Memorial Nara City Museum of Photography] / AI video production cooperation: Ahn Jun [Artist, Specially Appointed Associate Professor, Faculty of Engineering, Nara Women's University]), held in 2025, was a student-curated project implemented as part of this initiative.
Highlights of the exhibition
Reinterpreting the "Tokyo Collection" from a new perspective
This project reinterprets the works of Daido Moriyama, held in the collection of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, from the perspective of students from the Faculty of Engineering at Nara Women's University, presenting a new interpretation that incorporates a modern sensibility and engineering thinking. The students are involved in the planning and operation of the exhibition, including work selection, theme setting, and exhibition design, bringing out the multifaceted appeal of the works.
Gallery talk by students from Nara Women's University
Students who participated in the curation of this exhibition will give gallery talks explaining the highlights of the exhibition and the intentions behind the selection of artworks. We hope to provide an opportunity for you to deepen your understanding of this exhibition by introducing the exhibition's concept and the appeal of the artworks from a student's unique perspective.
Practical attempts to link education/research with museum activities
Using the "Tokyo Collection" as teaching material, students participate in practical curation. By sharing the process from research and study to exhibition design, the program offers an experimental viewing experience as an exhibition created while learning.
