A clump of weeds ひと叢の雑草

FUKUHARA Roso 福原 路草

Roso showed this work in the Second Fukuhara Roso Photogaphy Exhibition (Shiseido Gallery, March, 1937). In it, a straight photograph of some perfectly ordinary weeds is condensed the photographer’s transitory interest in his subject. In it we discern the literary side of Roso, who enjoyed composing haiku. In that respect, his work is based more on distinctively Japanese sensibility than Western romanticism, but at the same time is not inconsistent with the time in which he was working, that is, the Modern.

作品画像：右腕と左前腕の欠損で生まれたハア（Ha、生後10ヵ月）を抱く母親のタイ（Nguyen Thi Thai、25歳）。ハアにはクロルアクネ（塩素にきび）状の皮膚発疹もみられた。母親が米軍機の枯葉剤を浴びたのは12歳当時のこと。有機塩素系の枯葉剤Agent Orangeの中には発癌性と催奇性を併せ持つ 2378-TCDD（ダイオキシン）が不純物として混入していた（Tay Ninh=タイニン省、Loc Hung=ロクフン村。1981年）

Nguyen Thi Thai, a 25-year-old mother, holds Ha, 10 months old, who was born with missing right arm and left forearm. Ha also had a chloracne-like skin rash. Her mother was 12 years old when she was exposed to defoliant from a U.S. military plane. The organochlorine defoliant Agent Orange contained 2378-TCDD (dioxin), which is both carcinogenic and teratogenic (Tay Ninh Province, Loc Hung Village, 1981).
